Newton and Mary W. Newton, Baptist missionaries, and was born in Hwanghsein, Shandong Province, China. As a child he grew up in Qindao, also in Shandong Province and later attended the Shanghai American High School. He came to the United States to enter the University of Richmond where he graduated in 1940 and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. He served with distinction throughout World War II and later enjoyed a most successful career and life as a banker, sailor and crew advocate, and accomplished woodworker. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Vera Hartz Newton; daughters, Sally Newton Herbert and her husband Robert S., Vera Newton White and her husband Robert C.; and a son, William Carey Newton III, all of Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by a son, Roy McBride Newton Jr. and eight brothers and sisters. Also left to cherish his memory are five grandchildren, Glowyn White Roughton, Jack Hartz Herbert, Peter Steven Herbert, Roy McBride Newton III and Ashley Newton Sierant and two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Madeline. Roy's service to his country began as a member of the Merchant Marine, which he joined after leaving the University of Richmond in his junior year. He sailed throughout the Atlantic and Baltic Seas before returning to Richmond to graduate and accept a commission in the U.S. Navy in 1940. As an ensign he reported to the USS Chester (CA-27) in Pearl Harbor and participated in her many wartime battles including the Guadalcanal- Tulagi raid, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and support operations in the Solomons. Roy also served in USS Duluth (CL-87) and later as executive officer of USS Aucilla (AO- 56). Following a tour as commanding officer, Bremerton Ammunition Depot, Bremerton, Wash., he left active duty, continuing his naval service in the Naval Reserve until his retirement with the rank of captain in 1967. He began a successful banking career in Norfolk in 1954 when he joined the National Bank of Commerce as assistant cashier in the Foreign Department. For the next 28 years, Roy supported the growth and development of the bank, traveling throughout Europe and Asia helping to build the international practice of the bank. He retired in 1982 as a senior vice president for International Banking from what was then the Virginia National Bank. During his career with the bank, Roy participated in trade missions with Governors Godwin and Holton. He was a member and held office in the Foreign Commerce Club, the Virginia Maritime Association, the World Trade Conference, and the Bankers of Foreign Trade and Allied Bank. replica clothing As a longtime Virginia Beach resident, Roy built sailboats and skiffs and sailed Broad Bay, the Chesapeake and the Atlantic for many years. He was one of the early commodores of the Broad Bay Sailing Association, teaching many to sail in Penguins, Hamptons, and sailing dinghies, including his children and grandchildren. Throughout most of his life he was also actively engaged in crew. He helped organize the University of Richmond Crew team as a student and coached the Virginia Boat Club in the 1930s. Fifty years later, he helped organize the Hampton Roads Rowing Club in the 1980s. He rowed most mornings on Broad Bay until he was nearly 90 years old. As an accomplished woodworker, Roy built boats, toys for his grandchildren, and fine furniture.
