Even Victorian mahogany furniture was popular, exemplified by the telescopic dining table on attractive reeded legs, which, despite a slightly warped top, was taken to a triple estimate pounds1,400 by a Cambridgeshire telephone bidder. An 18ct Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date with diamond set face, went to a Norfolk telephone bidder for pounds3,400, a Rolex 18ct gold Daytona also selling over the telephone for pounds4,900. A George III mahogany banded oak longcase clock with brass dial by Barlow of Oldham made pounds2,200, while an early 18th century oak longcase by Tomlinson of London reached pounds2,500. Star of the sale was the late 19th century walnut cased Polyphon by Peters of Leipzig. Playing 20in metal discs on two combs, this coin operated precursor of the juke box was consigned by a Chudleigh vendor and despite national advertising, went to a new home only a few streets away in the town for an above estimate pounds6,000. A late 18th century blunderbuss pistol by Prosser of London also sold over estimate to a local collector for pounds2,200. A much longer journey, however, awaits the early 19th century micromosaic snuff box which is returning to its homeland after being secured for a multi-estimate pounds5,500 by a bidder from Rome against telephone underbidding from London and New York.
