The total number of votes cast was 1,104, which equates to a 29.6 per cent turnout of the 3,729 total electorate. The postal vote turn-out was 54.8 per cent. Within hours, Mr Kennedy had put up a giant thank you banner in the town. "I want to say a huge thanks to the people of Shepton for putting their trust in me, and I promise to stand up for Shepton in the weeks and months ahead," he said. He said the result was a clear indication from the voters of growing support for the Liberal Democrats and he was confident that support would be reflected in the district council elections next May. "It struck me how seriously concerned people are about many various issues from finance and services to planning, potholes, rat- runs, gypsy sites and over-hanging trees," he said. Mr Kennedy said he also owed huge thanks to daughters Sorcha and Caitlin who knocked on doors delivering leaflets.
